Inhale, Exhale, Pause

I got to geek out a little this past weekend at the Toronto Yoga Show. To be more specific, I got to watch a yoga idol of mine, Rodney Yee, first wander through a crowd of people, and give adjustments to people practicing. Then he moved onto the stage to lead the rest of the class through to the end.

May not seem like a big deal to you, but he was one of the first people who made me take an interest in the practice. 

When I was first starting out, I totally wanted to move like Rodney!

Just to clarify, I don’t move like Rodney while I do yoga, and I never will, and I’m totally fine with that.

But once I got over my initial excitement of seeing him in person, I strained to hear him say some wonderful words over the noisy surrounding crowd. 

Have you ever heard him speak? It’s like listening to magic. (Yep, I’m still geeking out over here.)

Near the end of his session, Rodney gave the instructions of:

Inhale. Exhale. Pause. 

I did what he said.

He repeated the mantra.

Inhale. Exhale, Pause. (Repeat)

I noticed many people doing what he said.

There was a beautiful silence in that pause, but it felt like something big was taking place.

That noisy crowd that surrounded me seemed to shut right up.

People near to me were doing what he said. They were taking the time to inhale, exhale and then explore that pause. It wasn’t meant to be a long pause, just enough so that you weren’t rushing to fill your lungs with more air as soon as you had emptied them.

I don’t believe this mantra is new. I think I’ve heard Rodney (or someone else) say it before, but in that moment it was like I was hearing it for the first time.

It's amazing how old words can sometimes feel new and give you a whole new perspective.

I was so grateful to have witnessed how those words could force me and those around me to inhale, exhale, pause. Seems very simple, but for me it was like I was granted permission to just stop, even if it was only for a moment and know that the pause (any pause) is not necessarily a bad thing.

For me this mantra is one that I’ve added to my list of self talk. I plan to use it often, and in many different places.
